The University of Graz (Karl-Franzens-Universität Graz), founded in 1585, is Austria’s second-oldest and second-biggest university with more than 30,000 students in six different faculties. The university has been home to many internationally renowned scientists and thinkers such as Nobel Laureate Erwin Schrödinger or famous economist Joseph Schumpeter. Due to its geographical location close to the Slovenian boarder it has traditionally served as a gateway to South-Eastern Europe.
Once the setting for an imperial residence of the Habsburgs, the City of Graz today is a vibrant university town full of secluded renaissance courtyards, medieval alleys, bustling squares and a unique Mediterranean charm. As UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site and European Cultural Capital of 2003, Graz delights visitors by combining a glorious past with a dynamic present at the crossroads of European cultures.
A special side attraction for conference participants is the Austrian Film Festival Diagonale that takes place in Graz from March 28th to April 2nd, 2017.
